Challenge:Rex Moore Electrical Contractors and Engineers is a family-owned and managed electrical and integrated systems engineering and construction company, with operations in seven states. The Sacramento, CA–based company employs over 650 electricians and 140 full-time, salaried employees. Challenged with finding the perfect candidate to fill a Sr. Electrical Project Manager position, Gregory Anderson, human resources director at Rex Moore, turned to RCI after two traditional recruiting firms and a headhunter declined to take on the project. The criteria for the position were very specific and the search firms indicated they could not take on this particularly challenging project as a result. Finally, Anderson yielded to the persistence of RCI. The HR director put his fate in the hands of Recruiter Angela Hill, a specialist in niche projects, and commissioned the recruitment firm to perform a container search, one of many options within the company’s Talent Outsourcing services. "We were challenged with the perfect storm of difficulty," Anderson said, "a position where the level of competency is extremely difficult to find anywhere in the country, exacerbated by our unique corporate culture...and relocation." Solution:RCI began with a comprehensive intake, which encompassed a two and a half hour interview with Anderson to fully understand the criteria that the company set for the Sr. Electrical Project Manager position. "Angela took the time to learn what the position and our culture was about. She asked really good questions to get that understanding," Anderson explained. "The differences between RCI and (other firms) were significant." Once the intake was completed, RCI implemented its search product, starting with an extensive sourcing strategy. Hill presented RCI’s expert sourcing team with a keyword string specific to the position. Sourcing from hundreds of job boards and Internet sites, resumes were given to Hill for review. Hill then emailed all candidates who piqued her interest, followed by direct phone calls to those who closely matched her criteria. She said she "was not necessarily targeting the perfect candidate, but those that could lead to the perfect candidate." Unconventional to most recruiting methods, Hill searched for referrals. “When speaking to someone, I always ask if they have ever reported to someone who they believe would be great for this position,” she said. The key, she added, is to focus on the opportunity and not the position. The rest will fall into place. When resumes were obtained, they were forwarded to Anderson for feedback. Once the feedback was received, the RCI recruiter focused on the specifics of what the company was looking for. "When someone hires us to do a container search, they are looking for the perfect marriage. Emotionally, I think (Anderson) was concerned about whether I could get this done," Hill said. "I convinced him that I may spend a little more time, but I will get the specific candidate he needs." Result:The hire was successfully completed in about 2 months. The client was satisfied with 5 of the candidates presented. Three of the candidates were screened by Rex Moore and one was brought in for a face-to-face interview and was offered the position. The offer was accepted. Rex Moore triumphed and achieved its goal of finding and hiring the ideal Sr. Electrical Project Manager. "My experience with RCI and Angela Hill has been very good when faced with a daunting recruiting task," Anderson said. "Angela kept me up to date on progress regularly and showed genuine understanding of our needs and delivered excellent candidates as a result." Anderson attributes Angela’s perseverance as a key to this success. The project manager started working at Rex Moore recently, and was described as having “the right experience, personality, and management talents." Anderson said, “A good PM could yield a return in the millions. A $15,000 investment is cheap in comparison." Anderson said he would recommend RCI for recruiting needs and has since commissioned RCI to conduct new searches.
